How to Spring Clean & Green your Beauty Cabinet with Anjie Cho

In the late summer of 2015, I was in Brookfield Place in lower Manhattan where I found a book titled “108 Ways to Create Holistic Spaces“.  I was in a bit of a rush, but snapped a photo of this because I knew this was something I needed to read. At the time I was with my Mom and said “I would love to meet this designer one day”.  A year later, my friend Katie Hess invited me to a super moon soirée on the roof top of building in Flatiron. I sat down next to Anjie and we started talking and I immediately knew we were going to be friends.  It wasn’t until in 2017 that I had finally got around to organizing my photos when I found this photo I had taken in 2015 to remind me I wanted to read this book, and to my surprise the author was my incredible friend Anjie Cho!  Since getting to know Anjie and watching her on YouTube, I often turn to Anjie when I’m feeling like something could be made better or for practical solutions to improve the flow of energy and balance in my space.  Learn more from her podcasts HERE.

I wanted to find out more about Anjie for some advice on how to Spring Clean our beauty cabinets and asked her for some advice… Check it out!

In feng shui, spring is a time for new beginnings and growth. We’re emerging from the cold contractive energy of winter and expanding into this space of welcoming freshness. So it makes perfect sense that this is the time to do some “spring cleaning”. One area that often gets overlooked is your beauty cabinet and products. Feng shui offers suggestions as to how to be mindful about the spaces and objects in our environment, and this extends to your beauty cabinet and products. Here are some quick tips to spring clean and feng shui your beauty routine!

De-clutter your products

Spring is a great time to go through all of your beauty cabinet and see what’s expired or items that you haven’t used in years. You can recycle the plastic or glass bottles and make some space in your cabinet. If you’ve thought about tossing something more than 3 times, means it’s time to let it go.

Green your products

What you put on your skin directly affects you, and it affects your environment and interconnects with all living beings.
Maybe you can trade out something for a green, ethical alternative.

Clean your mirrors

Mirrors can reflect, clarify and open up your spaces. Be sure your mirrors (even inside a makeup compact) are cleaned and crystal clear. That way you can clearly see yourself and your true beauty (inside and out)

Rose quartz

I love rose quartz! It’s a stone that brings healing and self-love. I also love how Modern Minerals has gem essences in their products. Similarly, placing a piece of rose quartz in your beauty cabinet can bring the healing and self-caring vibes into your beauty products and into your life.

Palo santo

I always have a bottle of my holistic spaces Cleanse room mist in my purse. In this case, it’s perfect to uplift the energy of your beauty cabinet. Just a spray or two can open up the space and transmute any energies into bright open spaciousness. Space clearing your beauty cabinet is a wonderful way to invite love and light into your life.

Lighting

Interior lighting is fire energy in feng shui vocabulary. And fire energy is passion and how the world sees you! clean any dusty light bulbs and fixtures in your beauty area. If possible you can upgrade to energy efficient lighting, using soft white light bulbs (2700K). Some attention to your lighting can re-ignite your fire and create some radiance and magnetism!

More about Anjie…

Q1. How did you first decide to create beautiful and sacred spaces?

When I was 15 or so I visited the Sydney opera house. It was a transformative experience, walking through this iconic building and learning why materials were chosen, how the spaces were created, and all the while experiencing the magnificence of the energy itself.

Q2. If you had to choose, which is your personal favorite way to Create a Mindful Peaceful home right now?

Definitely using my palo santo spray. It’s my favorite scent! I spray it around any space I’m in (like my office, my meditation area, when traveling). And I especially love also using it as a perfume (i spray it in the air and walk under it). It’s so cheerful, sweet and brightening. It instantly can uplift my internal and external qi.

I also am an ikebana practitioner, it’s part of my Shambhala Buddhist contemplative practices. Ikebana is asian flower arranging and flowers are really a wonderful way to shift the energy of a space. Fresh flowers bring joy and celebration into a space. Working the flowers brings mindfulness and peace. The flowers also bring in the quiet calm healing energy of nature into spaces.

Q3. Do you have any favorite beauty rituals? (can be internal and related to space if you like)

I love taking baths. In Chinese astrology, water is very nurturing for me… so it makes sense that I love to be near water forms. I live on the East River, love water.. and love baths. The addition of flower essences, essential oils, salts and gemstones are not only beautiful but healing. In feng shui, bathrooms are traditionally problematic spaces, however adding a bath ritual transforms the room into a scared and special space.

Q4. What are you reading or listening to or watching or obsessed with right now?

I’m obsessed with Kundalini yoga! 🙂 my birthday was on the big solar eclipse last year and my astrologer advised me to deeply focus on my body. I spent many years very focused on everything but my body so I started kundalini yoga. I go almost every day that I possibly can. The meditations and poses resonate deeply with me and it just makes me happy!

Q5. List the top 3 things people would be surprised to learn about you?

I never wanted to be an entrepreneur! It kinda fell into my lap. The universe had a plan for me and I had my eyes open and said yes.

P.S.  Anjie is wearing Modern Minerals Garnet Lip Gloss “It’s the perfect color for any season and makes my lips feel amazing!”
